Your Household
From 5–10pm on Thursday 22 October 2026, turn off your taps and discover how often you really reach for water. A fun way to build water awareness and knowledge.
How can my Household take part in Water Night?
This year’s theme is Tap Pause Level Up.
For five hours, we’re asking households across Australia to pause their usual tap use and pay attention to those everyday moments when we automatically reach for running water.
You might be surprised by just how often it happens.
Register your household for Water Night 2026, then encourage your family, friends and community to get involved too.
If you’re under 18, please make sure a parent or guardian registers on your behalf.

What happens on the night?
From 5–10pm on Thursday 22 October, avoid using taps, showers and other running water around your home.
With a little preparation, taking part is easy. Before Water Night begins, you might like to fill water bottles, the kettle or containers with any water you expect to need during the five-hour challenge.
Water Night isn’t about going without. It’s about noticing how often we use running water automatically and creating a moment to think about where our water comes from, how we use it and why it matters.
Do I have to go without water for five hours?
No. The challenge is about pausing your use of running water from 5–10pm. Prepare any water you think you’ll need before Water Night begins.
Can I flush the toilet?
Yes. The challenge focuses on becoming more aware of the running water we use throughout our everyday routines.
What should I do during Water Night?
Anything you like! Cook dinner using water you prepared earlier, play a game, watch a movie, try one of our Water Night activities or see who in your household reaches for the tap first.
The important part is simply to notice those automatic habits and start a conversation about water.
Make a night of it
Turn it into a challenge, see who reaches for the tap first, test your family’s water knowledge with a quiz, try one of our water-themed activities or get creative with the printable Koala and Emu Tap Guardians and Tap Guardian Bracelets.
Place your Tap Guardians around the house as a fun reminder to pause before turning on a tap, and use the activities to spark conversations about where water comes from, how we use it and why it matters.
Why take part?
Most of us use water every day without giving much thought to what happens before it reaches our taps.
Water Night creates a five-hour pause from the usual routine, giving households an opportunity to think about the water they use, learn something new and start conversations about why water matters.
Taking part is simple, but it might change the way you look at your tap.
